What is Wave 2 Technology?
Wave 2 is the latest 802.11ac release of transformational wireless LAN technology, which enables higher throughput speeds of up to 2.3Gbps, as well as taking advantage of new MU-MIMO (multi-user ‒ multiple-input and multiple-output). MU-MIMO essentially permits a higher simultaneous or concurrent user count to be dealt with more efficiently, resulting in higher density deployments and a smoother experience for users boarding and unboarding onto the WiFi. It is therefore no surprise that the leading wireless manufacturer, Ubiquiti Networks, has introduced various access points and products which makes the most of this new technology.

Wave 2 also introduces additional channels on the 5Ghz range. Whilst these are still awaiting approval to be accessible under standard unlicensed WiFi frequencies, they will offer more available channels to defer streams and reduce congestion, improving the efficiency of 802.11ac Wave 2.
Differences
1. Wave 2 opens up gigabit WiFi possibilities:
With the market dominating Google Fiber, AT&T GigaPower, and Verizon Fios, it is clear that gigabit internet is proving to be very popular. Although it is mostly constrained to a hardline connection, with Wave 2’s impressive throughput speed of up to 2.34 Gbps, there is a high likelihood that this could open up the possibility for gigabit WiFi.
2. Supports more connected devices with better connection:
Since Wave 2 offers greater density than Wave 1 in that it supports MU-MIMO technology, you are able to have multiple connected devices – meaning more concurrent users.
Although the support of MU-MIMO is also beneficial for consumer users, as most people tend to have multiple connected devices in their home, it is predominantly aimed at businesses. The growing number of mobiles, computers, tablets, and other various connected devices have created some frustrations for network admins. With Wave 2 MU-MIMO, the strain of these devices will be alleviated, allowing a good connection at all times.
3. It brings more bandwidth and flexibility:
One of the biggest updates that comes with 802.11ac Wave 2 is that it supports additional 5GHz channels. Whilst these still await approval under standard unlicensed WiFi frequencies, ultimately they will reduce congestion and improve performance.
